Following a query from a German researcher I'd be grateful if anyone can tell me about the dates of the various scientific name(s)of the Hooded Plover/Dotterel. As far as I know these have been: Charadrius cucullatus Charadrius rubricollis Thinornis rubricollis >From my field guides etc. I guess they came from the RAOU check lists (or equivalents) dated, respectively, 1926, 1975 (Condon - non-passerines) and 1994 (Christides & Boles). If this is right, can anyone explain the Slater 1989 edition (still being reprinted in 1995) including the first of these names ? I'd also like to know why the specific name was changed. Replies to me please at Michael Norris Hampton, Vic. To unsubscribe from this list, please send a message to Include ONLY "unsubscribe birding-aus" in the message body (without the quotes) |
