Hi Nick

I believe what you're talking about is actually a cassette series
produced by the Bird Observers Club of Australia (BOCA) - and it is an
excellent resource - very highly recommended.  The series is a work in
progress, and I guess would likely go onto CD once all the tapes are
done.  The first 11 (Emu to Scarlet Honeyeater) are available from Birds
Australia and BOCA (both Melbourne, mail-order) - but I'm not sure where
in Sydney they'd be available.
