Hi All,
A visit to Yorkeys Knob Lagoon (13km NW
of Cairns, QLD, beside the Half Moon
Golf Course) on the 26th with Jo Wieneke
and Ken Cross had us looking at an
unusual teal(for our region) which Ken
thought could have been a Chestnut. The
lighting was bad and the bird swam out
of view without any conclusions being
made. We returned today, 27th with Dawn
and Arnold Magarry. The bird was perched
alongside a group of Grey Teal on a pipe
on the water in full sun. It was
confirmed as a Chestnut Teal, its head
was noticeably darker and the breast had
a chestnut wash on it, there was also a
distinctive white patch at the base of
the tail which none of the other 50+
Grey Teal had.
Chestnut Teal are on the Cairns
Esplanade list (I don't know who
recorded them) and they have been seen
on the Atherton Tableland in the past.
Also of interest here was 8 Australian
Wood Duck and a Pink-eared Duck both
uncommon visitors to Cairns. There is
also three Darter nests here, two had
sitting males and the third had a
juvenile bird perched beside it.
Two weeks ago Jonathon Munro reported 2
Painted Honeyeaters at this location,
which were observed for 45mins - another
unusual record as the closest previous
record was Mcleod River north of Mt.
Carbine (about 140km as the crow flies
north west of Cairns) on the way to
Cooktown up the coast.
