Highlights of lists from members of the Blue Mountains Bird Observers for MAY 1999.

AUSTRALIAN BRUSH-TURKEY - 1 female seen daily at Mount Wilson from 28/5. This species has been reported in the past from Kurrajong Heights and Mountain Lagoon and occurs in the Wolgan Valley, but as far as I am aware, never before at Mt Wilson or elsewhere within the Blue Mountains area.

GREY GOSHAWK - One at Hazelbrook on 3/5.

BUFF-BANDED RAIL - Reported at Mount Victoria.

GLOSSY BLACK-COCKATOO - The only report for May was at Mount Riverview on 1/5.

YELLOW-TAILED BLACK-COCKATOO - In larger flocks including 30+ at Springwood, 35 at Blackheath, and 25+ at Woodford.

POWERFUL OWL - Again at Mount Riverview on 13,21,25/5; and at Hazelbrook on 9/5.

BRUSH CUCKOO - Reported from Blackheath (no date given).

WHITE-NAPED HONEYEATER - Along with Yellow-faced, numbers of migrating birds were down as previously reported. The only records of White-naped for May were at Woodford, Katoomba and Blackheath. Their absence was especially noted at Faulconbridge.

YELLOW-TUFTED HONEYEATER - One bird at Woodford on 2/5. Normally a bird of the lower Blue Mtns and the large valleys, rare in mid and upper mountains.

RUFOUS WHISTLER - Reported from Blackheath in May (no date given).

RUFOUS FANTAIL - Only May record was at Blackheath on 7/5.

EUROPEAN GOLDFINCH - One seen at Katoomba on 11/5. There used to be a resident flock here but haven't been seen for several years.

MISTLETOEBIRD - One at Katoomba on 11/5. There seem to be more sightings of these in the mountains this year than usual.

PIED CURRAWONG - Flocks of 100+ flying very definitely in a westward direction through Katoomba on 17 and 19/5. This continued on some dates in June as well.
