Very briefly, I don't wish to clog up Birding Aus. with non bird related
issues, but I would like to thank the many people who came back with
positive feedback to the virus alert.

I would also like to offer my sincere apologies to Michael Norris. After
conversing with him over the last couple of days I have found him to be a
helpful person who did not intend his private message to me to be quite so
blunt, and I am sorry for lashing out publicly and hurting another person.
I guess there was a little blame on both sides. Turning our other cheeks
would have been much better all round.

Here are two of the most helpful things. I hope it helps other people who
don't know what to do when this happens. BUT when in doupt send a message,
better to be safe than sorry.

You find out about this sort of thing (and how to handle it properly)on:

Thanks for the warning, but the "BUDDYLST.ZIP" virus warning is yet another
virus hoax.

Unfortunately, these hoaxes are becoming more common. Some of the ways you
can recognise them are:

- the messages use A LOT OF CAPITAL LETTERS!
- the messages nearly always urge you to FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE AS SOON
AS POSSIBLE!
- they rarely include specific identifying information, URLs for further
information etc.

When you receive one of these warnings, run a quick search on the search
engine of your choice. Almost always, you'll find out quickly whether it's
a hoax or something you really need to be concerned about.

If you always run a check before forwarding, you'll save yourself a lot of
embarrassment! But thanks for the thought.

regards
Brenda
