back in febuary there was some discussion on
ballions crake calls.some scepticism was placed
on the credibility of some observers who had reported
hearing the call.I now have a list of nine different
people who have heard the call. G Pizzey in both his field guides
describes the call so I was interested to find out where his source
of information came from.he told me he had heard them call
in s/e queensland and victoria and that recently within 2km
from his home. in emu vol 42 ( 1) p.33 C.E.Bryant recalls placing
a hide close to the nest of this crake where he was able to study
the bird in detail describing the call. 5 chicks hatched, according
to Bryant the female would allow him to touch her whilst on
the nest on one occasion allowing him to lift her off the nest.
so, we can say definitely that our ballions does call, all we now
require is for someone to record the call which I,m led to believe
will be a first for Australia, the recording on the BOCA tapes being
that of the N.Z.species.
