Brian Fleming posted a copy of his message to John Gamblin giving lots of
good advice on nest boxes.

In case it is of interest to anyone, I mention that back in the 1960's a
friend of mine, (now long since deceased) had kingfishers nesting in his
(Brisbane) suburban back yard for a number of years. I didn't note the
species but assume they were Sacred Kingfishers, with Forest a slight
possibility.

He merely collected from somewhere in the bush a termite's nest off a tree
and tied it up in a tree in his garden. He said the essential thing was to
put a backing board on the termite nest. That the kingfishers always
tunnelled in until they reached solid wood.

P S,
John, I strongly support Brian in the matter of Black Bean. It's a
beautiful timber when polished, and being primarily a rainforest tree, new
supplies are very, very scarce. I knew an architect once who specified
Balck Bean in preference to teak for ornamental woodwork - if money was no
object where the client was concerned.
