Hi everyone
In response to the people who have put up information about the White-throated
Needletail.
Over the summer period 98/99, the White-throated Needletail was in plentiful
supply at the Mt Beenak Firetower. Flocks of up to 40 birds could be found
dive bombing the tower between 9.30am and 11.00am, before leaving for the day.
A smaller flock of about 10 birds would come back to again fly around the tower
or mountain top at 5.30pm. This was a daily occurrence. It has also been a
common occurrence for the last couple of years. Only one bird has died during
this period after crashing into an aerial
Mount Beenak Firetower is where I worked last summer, it is 60 kilometres to
the east of Melbourne or 20 km south of Mt. Donna Buang and the closest town
is Powelltown. The height about sealevel is 740 metres.
