1. A friend of mine who teaches on Bribie Island (70km north of Brisbane
QLD) told a good story over dinner tonight. Outside her school, on open
grassy areas, there are currently large numbers of both Australian White and
Straw-necked Ibis. Yesterday, she observed a Torresian Crow apparently
grabbing hold of the tail of an ibis (she didn't say which species) with its
bill and hanging on whilst being twirled around through almost 360 degrees.
This happened on several occasions. Perhaps the wine is infiltrating the
brain cells, but I'm at a loss to interpret this behaviour (of the crow).
2. Yesterday, 20/5, I saw at least two Silvereyes on Bribie Island of the
Tasmanian race. The Slater field guide suggests that they do migrate as far
north as Caloundra (another 40km north) but it's still exciting to see a
migrant from cooler climates (although you wouldn't think so if you've been
in SEQ these past few days!) Roll on Swift Parrots.
3. Philip A Veerman, our protector of the correct use of the apostrophe,
doesn't apply the same standards to the indefinite article - "Well
it is certainly a misleading that ... ". Actually, Philip, working with
assorted emails and documentation constantly during my normal day, I've come
to the conclusion that the use of an apostrophe before an 's' has evolved to
become random. Sob! At least we don't yet have punters using half a dozen
of them as with exclamation and question marks!!!!!!??????
