Thanks to all who replied to my query about the firewood industry and its effect on bird habitat. I now have some useful references which I will follow up. The main point to come out of this is that consumers should make a point of finding out where the firewood they buy is gathered and choose wood which comes from plantations, which apparently can be a viable solution, at least in some areas.
