Hi all,
Have just returned from the latest in a series of Black-eared Miner field
trips. Not a lot to report really as birds proved very difficult to find.
Following the unprecedented breeding activity last Autumn and Spring (over
100 nests located) the miners seem to be taking a breather at the moment.
Consequently with no breeding activity evident colonies are moving over
larger areas and at many sites no birds were seen. Of the three colonies for
which directions have been posted at the registration point on Gluepot
(Murray Mallee, SA) miners in the easterly colony were the easiest to find.
While the chance of getting good views of Black-eared Miners will almost
certainly improve in Spring most visitors I spoke to over the past three
weeks had seen Black-eared Miners and hybrids.
Please continue to let me know of any sightings of Bems or hybrids, breeding
activity and colourband records as soon as possible after the event.
Most other birds on Gluepot were also pretty quiet but did see 3 malleefowl,
4 or 5 Red-lored Whistlers (not singing at the moment) and a handful of
Regent Parrots. As usual Striated Grasswrens remain abundant and easy to
find in the denser spinifex.
