CONSERVATION EXTENSION POSITION
Woodland Birds Coordinator- Central New South Wales
Many woodland birds in the temperate woodlands of New South Wales are in
rapid decline. However, public knowledge of the plight of woodland birds
remains poor. The Woodland Birds Project has been developed by Birds
Australia and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service to create
awareness throughout the community on the conservation of woodland birds
and their importance to the wider environment.
Expressions of interest are sought for the position of Woodland Birds
Coordinator to carry out this project.
The position is on a 12 months, part-time basis. The successful applicant
will work either from home or, subject to available space, from an office
provided by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. Access to a vehicle
is required. The job will involve periodic travel to other parts of the
state. The position is approximately 2 days a week over a 12 month period,
commencing in June 1999. Hours are flexible with some weekend and evening
work required. Salary is $38,000 pro rata..
The specific tasks are to promote the conservation of woodland throughout
the wheatbelt of New South Wales by obtaining extensive media coverage and
by organising and participating in public talks and field days. In part
the Woodland Birds Coordinator may achieve these aims by organising
relevant expert speakers for the media or for field days, but to a large
extent the Coordinator will be required to speak personally on woodland
bird conservation.
ESSENTIAL
1. Familiarity with birds and the natural history of the NSW woodlands
2. An understanding of the issues facing rural communities
3. An ability to effectively use the media, including radio and newspaper
interviews, to convey information.
4. Good communication, liaison and consultative skills
5. Ability to manage a flexible work schedule
6. A current ?A? class drivers licence & access to own vehicle
7. Resident on the Western Slopes
DESIRABLE
1. Previous experience in rural extension work.
2. Well developed report and media release writing skills.
3. Experience in the use of word processing, spreadsheet and database
software.
