G'day All ,
Just a note of interest ,
a Marbled Frogmouth [ Podargus Ocellatus ] , was found by a surfer 250
metres out to sea off Belongil Beach at Byron Bay last month , flapping
around on the top of the waves .
He picked it up and "surfed" it back to shore ,notified the local
Wildlife Carers , and it was taken into care . The bird was very down on
condition but otherwise seemed to check out o.k. It remained in care
until a full recovery was established , was then positively I.D.'d ,
banded and re-released into a much more suitable habitat and area [ a
long way from where it was rescued ! ].
Many theories as to why it would be in such an un-likely habitat have
been offered , but the real reason only the bird knows , may-be a
planned winter in New Zealand . The weather had been exceptionaly calm
and clear during the period it was found , and to my knowledge this
species has not been recorded on the coastal fringe ever before .
