Lead a few members of the Cumberland Bird Observers Club today
(24/4/99) for some birding in the Central Coast area in NSW, just 90 km north of
Sydney (or 45 minutes drive from town). The 3 main areas visited were
:
KATANDRA RESERVE (just a little east
of Gosford) - pretty quite with a few Rainforest Pigeons seen or heard -
Wonga, Brown-cuckoo-dove, Emerald Dove, White-headed and about
100 Topknot Pigeons, Fan-tailed and Golden Bronze-cuckoos, Rose
Robin, with no Bowerbirds or Catbirds about. The Bell Miner colony
seemed to have moved out.
NORAH HEAD (north of Gosford near
Toukley)- Despite the southerly breezes, seabirds were scarce for the period of
time we were there, with only one or two Gannets, an
Arctic Jaeger and a distant Albatross. A
Sooty Oystercatcher was on the rocks and nearby this area, 2
late White-breasted Woodswallows and a Spangled
Drongo.
ST HUBERTS ISLAND (east of Woy Woy or
south of Gosford) - pretty quite here again with a Mangrove
Heron, an over-wintering Sacred Kingfisher, and 2
Bush Stone Curlews (not so successful in hiding themselves in
the mangroves).
Just another excuse to get outside the house on a cold and
windy, winter like day.
Edwin
P.S.
Swamp Mahogany have just started to flower
around the Central Coast, but sorry David, no Regent Honeyeaters or Swift
Parrots seen. Perhaps a little latter
!!!.
