Photos needed for HANZAB research
Dear birders
As many of you know, work on Volume 5 of the 'Handbook of Australian, New
Zealand and Antarctic Birds' (HANZAB) is now well advanced. To help with
finalising the Field Identification and Plumages texts and particularly, the
colour plates, we are in urgent need of colour photos (preferably slides) of
the following species or plumages:
Red-bellied and Blue-winged Pittas: anything.
Noisy and Rainbow Pittas: juveniles and immatures.
Treecreepers: juveniles.
Blue-breasted Fairy-wren: all 'brown' (i.e. female, non-breeding male, imm.
and juvenile) plumages. Also need close-up shots of head to show colour and
contrast of bill vrs loral stripe & eyering for brown plumages, esp. adult
female.
Variegated Fairy-wren: ditto Blue-breasted FW re head close-ups; needed
especially for Variegated populations sympatric with Blue-breasted.
Splendid Fairy-wren: ditto Blue-breasted.
Grasswrens: juveniles.
Red-browed Pardalote: juvenile.
Bristlebirds: juveniles.
Honeyeaters: juveniles.
Chats: females, immatures and juveniles.
Gibberbird: anything, but especially juvenile.
Perhaps you're thinking that we've already been sent some you-beaut photos
and mine aren't so good so why should I bother? Sadly, the truth is that
previous photo requests such as this have yielded precisely zero responses!
So ask yourself: are my slides just sitting there gathering dust, or do I
want to make them useful by contributing to the success of the Handbook?
Here at Hanzab we like to think that Australian birders are a caring bunch
who will go all the way to help our birds!
So if you can help or know of someone else who can, please send any photos
or contact me here at Birds Australia HQ
415 Riversdale Rd
Hawthorn East VIC 3123.
Alternatively, you can phone (03-8822622) or email me here at HQ (please put
Attn DW Eades in the Subject line to ensure your email reaches me).
Naturally, any assistance given will be fully acknowledged in the book, and
all material will be safely stored in cool, dust-free conditions in a
fire-proof room.
Hoping to hear from my fellow birders,
David W Eades
