G'day birdos,
Male and female Little Bitterns at Cairns Croc Farm today, April 13,
plus White-browed Crake and Buff-banded Rail as usual, a single Channel
Billed Cuckoo and a few Crimbo Finches. No Brown-backed Honeyeaters was
strange, but lots of Yellow Honeyeater.
Black Mountain Road ( oops, sorry, near Kuranda, near Cairns) migrants
include a single Square-tailed Kite hanging around, a Little Eagle
earlier in the week, Golden Whistlers, Leaden Flycatchers, a party of 11
Spangled Drongos, lots of Rainbow Bee-eaters and a few Dollarbirds.
We found a nesting pair of Black-throated Finch near Tinaroo Creek Road,
and a new male Cassowary for our garden at Cass House. Actually its the
one who brought a large chick along late last year and whom we never saw
again until now. The 3 local chicks have been abandoned by the female
and are now on their own, looking somewhat bemused by it all. We doubt
the carrying capacity of the area to sustain all of them........
Happy birding
Phil Gregory
Cassowary House, Black Mountain Road, Kuranda.
