Great Shearwater off Portland.

Mike Carter called today to point out that a GREAT SHEARWATER was
sighted off Portland VIC, yesterday (11-Apr-99). To date there is only
one confirmed record for Australia, that being a bird sighted off SE
South Australia 31-Jan-99 (Neil Cheshire and David Eades I seem to
recall).

No doubt there will be more information later. Did not want to be the
only one feeling rather gripped this morning! The next pelagic from
Portland is not until next month so the chances of seeing this bird are
next to zero, which makes this record so very damaging for those of us
into sea birds.

PS. The Sydney Pelagic was cancelled on Saturday due to a minor break-
down just outside Sydney Heads but still managed to see Flesh-footed,
Wedge-tailed, Short-tailed, Fluttering and Hutton's Shearwater along
with a few Terns and Arctic Jaegers.

Regards
Tony
