Edwin Vella wrote "With all the heavy rain we have had recently along the
NSW coast, the low lying areas and swamps between Raymond Terrace ( within
20 km NW of Newcastle) and Maitland has become a haven for an enormous
amount of waterbirds, namely "thousands" of Sacred and Straw-necked Ibis
(many presumably nesting?)"

It is extremely unlikely that these ibis would be nesting. They do
concentrate in large numbers in the areas you mention, especially on
recently flooded areas. I suggest that the numbers may be particularly
high this year because of the extensive breeding this past summer in the
inland NSW wetlands.

Has anyone any information on just how well the colonial birds did in
places like the Macquarie Marshes, Gingham Watercourse and Narran Lake?
