It might depend on when you were there. We were in NZ in November 1990 on a tour which included a very keen English person with tape=recorder. She was disappointed because Magpies were not singing, but was told it was because they were too busy feeding young to have the time. However a very early morning session near Dunedin happily resulted in some good magpie song on tape. I always notice magpie song here in Vic., like Grey Butcherbird, as more noticeable in autumn and winter than in summer.
