Dear birding.aus,

In regards to the Duck à l'Orange recipe - please understand
I am vehemently opposed to duck shooting and I am sorry if
this recipe offended anyone.

However those who criticized the duck recipe (and me
personally) seemed to have missed the point. The recipe is
suggestive of an internal sociological contradiction in our
community - indeed our own bird watching community. For
example, 95% of the people who subscribe to birding.aus
probably have a duck recipe sitting on their kitchen
shelves!

The recipe was a chance for us to laugh at ourselves - and
at our own inadequacies. As an analogy, the best anti-war
movies are usually humorous - see 'Dr. Strangelove, or How I
Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb'.

The recipe was a joke - a consequential joke. It implied
that we should first look at our own behaviour before we
criticize the behaviour of others.

All the best,

Tim
