Highlights from twice-weekly Canberra Ornithologists' Group (COG) hotline,
for period ending 9 March (some reports are of earlier obs).
AUTUMN WELL UNDERWAY. LOTS OF EARLY DEPARTURES; ALSO WINTER RETURNS FROM THE
LOCAL MOUNTAINS.
PIED CURRAWONGS. arriving down from mountains in numbers (lots stay
down in summer now too), with their typical autumn yodelling calls.
KING PARROTS likewise [except for yodelling!]
EASTERN SPINEBILLS also a couple of weeks early down for the winter
RAINBOW BEE-EATERS flocks moving out, from last week of Feb.
LEADEN FLYCATCHERS good numbers passing through, in last week of Feb.
RED-WHISKERED BULBUL 13/2 calling near Lake George (40k NE of here, on
Sydney highway). [VERY few local records]
NIGHT HERONS 28/2 4 immatures at suburban Jerrabomberra Wetlands
SPINE-TAILED SWIFTS 20/2 2 only, over suburban Kambah [still only the
3rd Canberra record for the season - remarkable!]
~1/3 huge flocks between Braidwood and Bungendore
(ie about 40-70k east of here, towards coast)
CHANNEL-BILLED CUCKOO 10/3 1 at ANU campus (!) [VERY VERY uncommon here]
6/3 1 at Bungendore (40k to east)
