birding-aus
Almost a last chance to see some waders before they fly north ???. Last
night 25.2.99 at high tide between 5.45 and 6.15 pm, there were 103
Bar-tailed Godwits and 24 Red-necked stints at Penrhyn - many of the former
coming into gorgeous red-brown breeding plumage and the stints starting to
show red necks, particularly one that was quite blushing!
Also several Fairy Terns and a 4 yr (?) Pacific Gull.
What is really appalling about this site and also the Foreshore Drive at
present (which is so good for waders as well as the Fairy Terns), is the
selection and quantity of rubbish - a real disgrace to the people who use
the area and the Council responsible. A lot of it looks due to the
fishermen and boat people who use the ramps, as well as passing transport
along the main road.
I hope Clean Up Day can get down there and make an impression but what do
we do to educate ordinary people???
