The Silver Gull familiar to most of us is quite willing to scavenge
food scraps in bay side parks and streets and from rubbish tips.
The Silver Gulls at Point Lookout, North Stradbroke Island, do not
do this.
Until the 1980's we had a town rubbish tip and to the delight of the
local crows and goannas , it was well stocked with food scraps. This tip
was closed and an Island tip opened along the road to Dunwich. Neither
tips were patronised by Gulls.
Our Gulls, some 30-40 in number, have an "oceanic" habitat and mostly
spend their days fossicking for planktonic debris along the tide line of
the beaches. They are never seen in the streets or outside the
'take-away' food shops or in the picnic areas.
Are there two populations of Silver Gulls differentiated by feeding
behaviour?
