Mike,

This is possibly Queenslands first record of Mottled Petrel (or was one
seen on a Southport pelagic last year?) if confirmed. The shape of the east
coast and their migration pattern (to the NE Pacific) means they are
unlikely to occur on the coast north of Cape Byron. Mottled Petrels like
cold water, usually less tha 15 degrees celsius. In Feb there are a few off
southern Tas but most are in subantarctic and antarctic waters. They do
migrate to the north pacific but they race through the warmer waters and
are rarely recorded on migration. most don't leave the southern ocean
until March, but strangely the handfull of NSW records are from Oct., Nov.,
Dec., Jan and Mar.

Your record would be worth documenting properly if possible.
