birding-aus
Living in Canberra, where both Little and Australian Raven exist I often
find myself listening for their calls to distinguish those that are too far
away to distinguish by other means.
We all know that the Little is slightly higher pitched and doesn't have the
descending cadence of the Australian ('like a dying sheep' as someone once
put it). However the number of times I've been listening, sometimes for
fifteen minutes, to Raven calls with not one descending phrase, and was just
about to conclude 'Littles', when, with great glee, one of the birds gives a
greatly exaggerated descending phrase and the other birds caaw away in amusment.
In Canberra, somebody has noted that the correlation between schools and
pairs of Australian ravens is very high. Oh for a diet of crumbs of museli
bars and crusts of peanut-butter sandwiches.
