birding-aus The latest Land for Wildlife News (Victoria) actually has two short articles regarding kookaburras and nest competition. The first relates, complete with photo, of a pair of kookaburras nesting in a hay bale. Accommodation is short west of Boort (Vic). The second tells of a pair of kookaburras that raised in a nest box before it was taken over by a Brush-tailed Possum. They then nested in a dead limb and were successful. This year they nested in the same limb but the young fledged prematurely, evicted by a Brush-tailed Possum. In cities, like Melbourne where possum numbers are artificially high, this might be a serious problem.
