Yes, I totally agree with Keith. All crake calls once learned are easy to
distinguish. Spotted, Spotless and Baillon's have all been calling during
the last week or so at McGraths Hill STW. Even the 2 rails that you find
around Sydney are usually heard and easy to distinguish. In particular the
Lewins Rail has atleast 4-5 different calls. One of the calls of the Lewin's
sounds like a galloping horse (refer to the BOC tape's 2 & 3). I have been
fortunate to have heard all the Sydney Rail and Crake calls found on the BOC
tapes.
I find though through my own experience that the most vocal were the many
White-browed Crakes I encountered at the Cairns Crocodile Farm near Edmonton
in October, more than a year ago. At the time I also heard Red-necked Crakes
calling at several locations. Even their calls are quite distinguishable
when once learned. It does however take sometime to remember which call
belongs to which bird.
