Train drivers in New Zealand would seem to have time to rescue penquins
To do this he would have had to pull the train up (several hundred
metres at any speed) before backing up.
Nice story though.

Train spotting
A TRAIN DRIVER was startled to see a young penguin lying close to the track
about 15km north of Kaikoura. He managed to stop the train and radioed to
Wellington for permission to back up the train about half a kilometre. The
bird, which was sleeping about 40cm from the rails, barked and snapped at
him, but nestled into his shoulder when he picked it up. The driver was
amazed to see the bird must have climbed over rocks, crossed the busy
highway, and then scaled a steep embankment. No wonder it was exhausted. He
placed it safely by a small pool near the sea
(No it was not me.)
