In response to Merrilyn Serong on lorikeet movements:

I am in Chadstone/Jordanville, about halfway between Burwood and
Oakleigh and can confirm the pattern. It's just on 8 years. There were
small flocks of musks going west in the mornings and east in the
evenings when I moved in. These have increased in overall numbers, and
have been joined by numbers of rainbows.

We have a flowering gum. This is the first year since '91 when I arrived
that the full foliage on it has flowered (it is diseased). The musks
have always stopped by in small numbers, but now we are getting rainbows
too.

I have seen a number of goshawks around, mainly immatures, but last year
saw a mature bird harassing rainbows feeding on a fig tree in the
neighbourhood.

Recent highlight: two days ago a nankeen kestrel over the local 7-11.

In January I had a week around Mt Buffalo and following advice from Ed
McNabb checked a spot on the Buckland River for owls. Only heard, very
far off, two boobooks, but did see a greater glider in the area Ed
thought a possible for powerful owls.

Also an interesting pellet on Mt Buffalo near the Back Wall; possible
barking owl product.

Undoubted highlight for the trip was the whistler scene. Rufous were
everywhere and their vocalisation impressed me more than ever, including
some great dueting. Goldens too, and probably olives.

Cheers,

Craig
