birding-aus
Dr Derek Scott and his neighbour, Harry Howard, set out to try and see
one member of each bird family in the world in 1998. We have just had
word that they succeeded. To determine families, reference was had to
Clements, Howard & Moore, and a number of less well-known authorities.
They visisted all continents except Antarctica, and had some wonderful
birding. The Gray-necked rockfowl (picathartes sp) (which involved a 9
day trip to Cameroon) and the Refous scrub-bird (ours) (which required a
24 km hike in Lamington) were considered to be the two hardest birds to
get. I have some further details if anyone is interested.
Before this magnificent journey is dismissed as merely a
mega-twitch, Dr Scott is a professional ornithologist who spends a deal
of time on international bird conservation. Some relaxation (if you
could call this epic journey that) can be accepted.
Half their luck!
