My cat has also caught starlings especially juveniles and does not eat them. However this is nothing as special as the same applies to sparrows and baby blackbirds. I doubt if it's anything to do with worms - my theory was that she thinks they are toys not food. As soon as they stop moving she drops them and goes away.
