In addition to Tom's note,myself Sheryl &
Arthur Keates arrived at the site at 0510hrs.with heavily overcast conditions
and rain threatening. We were able to watch them out in the open for at least
half an hour through scopes, the group comprising 2 males and 2 females. Those
wishing to see these splendid birds are probably best served by arriving just on
dawn or late in the afternoon-early evening, still, overcast conditions appear to
be best. The best spot would appear to be directly in front of the Samsonvale
Cemetary, scan the small grass and mud exposed patches out in the middle of the
water and the muddy edge to the left. They were first sighted at least 200 metres
away on a small grassy 'islet' so a scope is essential.I think Tom is trying for
them again this evening (4/4/99) so he'll keep us up to date.Good luck,it was a
new bird for me,at long last.(Paul Walbridge)
