Can anyone describe the colour of a Juvenile Green Catbird for me?
My husband and I observed what looked remarkably like a Toothbilled Catbird
gobbling down figs on a Ficus sp. in our garden - although we realise that
it cannot possibly be a Toothbilled at this location - Sunshine Coast, Qld
(152 .52 E x 26.22S).
We had an excellent opportunity to observe it and apart from the colouring
the only bird resembled was a Catbird, but because it had absolutely no hint
of green in its feathers, we assumed it must be an immature. However on
checking our bird books the only one with any description of an immature
bird was the Readers' Digest book, which describes an immature bird as
green, whereas this bird was streaky mottley brown with more streaky
colouring on the chest (almost exactly like the bird on page 596 of the
Readers Digest book). This only left the possibility that it might be a
juvenile, but it certainly knew what how to feed itself and there was no
sign of a parent anywhere.
We have from time to time seen a Green Catbird in our garden, and frequently
hear them calling in other parts of Pomona, so they are living in the
vicinity.
