The Buller's Shearwater was seen at a distance of between 40 to 50 metres
in flight from the beach and sitting on the water at approx. 50 to 60 metres
the bird was observed using a telescope for approx. four minutes and
was then seen to fly away in the company of two dark phase Wedge-tailed
Shearwaters for comparison.

Dr. Rolf Jensen who was one of the observers is familiar with the Buller,s
Shearwater from sightings and observations in Southern California USA.

There is no doubt that the bird observed was a Buller's Shearwater.
