Sunshine Coast, Queensland
I just had to share this delightful anecdote with you..........
Ivan & Joyce Fien live at Beachmere, near Bribie Island. Joyce was mowing
the lawn, and found a bit of nest on the ground, and discarded it. Next
day, another bit of nest was in the same spot, attached to a cobweb, and so
Joyce started nosing around. She realised there was a pair of Willie
Wagtails around the house, and worked out they must be first timers,
learning to build their first nest. Next day she and Ivan found a sturdier
nest being built under their verandah. They made it to the completion stage
this time. But the nest fell down. Ivan thought he would be wasting his
time, but couldn't help himself, and, using a few drops of silicon,
reattached the nest onto the verandah rafter. He expected it would be
rejected, perhaps because it might smell.
Not so! A very happy Willie is now incubating in its silicon nest.
But there's more.
Life at Beachmere is filled with excitement, or tragedy, depending on your
perspective.
They watched a Kookaburra in a tree by their verandah. It was very
attentive, and Ivan and Joyce waited to see what it was eyeing off. A
couple of Peewees were carrying on a treat, when the Kooka flew, cackling
maniacally, at the peewee tree, and after some banging and crashing,
emerged with a peewee nestling in its beak.
Cheers,
Jill Dening
