On a New South Wales Field
Ornithologist Club outing at Dharug NP, yesterday, we heard a Superb Lyrebird in
full song and one bird it mimicked was a White-throated Nightjar. How nice. The
birds are very tame. We strolled along behind a male for 10 minutes once.
No matter how many times I see this bird, it still looks terrific. The
light through the coloured lyre tail feathers was perfect.
Like all field outings, many field
guides appear, and in the new Pizzey & Knight, the pictures of the Leaden
& Satin Flycatchers show some differences. The male birds show a
difference on the breast where the black and white meet. We saw several
Leaden males,(or the same male several times) and couldn't see the
difference. On the female bird, we thought we could see the lighter colour
below the eye. What about some bird bander input here? Can you see it as
Pizzey & Knight illustrate it?
We saw about 55 species of bird in and
around Mill Creek picnic area.
Particular birds we did not see which
I had hoped to show the group were Lewin Rail, Glossy-black Cockatoo, Brush
Turkey, & Rock Warbler.
