I wonder what the electronic age will bring. People who play "sports" are now paid enormous sums simply because their activities are broadcast throughout the world and a very small contribution per viewer adds up to a huge amount. What is the potential (especially with the advent of digital TV - huge bandwidth but hungry for content) for electronic tourism ? What is its cost (financial and ecological) ? Maybe in a few years we (the OECD countries) will be able to remit automatically lots of dollars to third world countries who have something interesting to show about micro-organisms to top predators - like birds (and people!). Don't forget that in a few decades that globally petrol supplies will be enough to get the average car to the supermarket and back per day. Michael Norris Hampton |
