For anyone in Melbourne (or visiting Melbourne) who would like to see a
roosting Tawny Frogmouth up close and fairly personal there is (or at least
there was on Sunday 25th Oct) an adult with two well advanced chicks on a
nest above the entrance road to You Yangs Regional Park (about 40 mins
south-west of Melbourne down the Princes Freeway).
The exact location is: Driving OUT of the park, the boom-gate is on a
road island on which there are 2 large eucalypts. The second (outermost)
of these two trees has a major branch that overhangs the exit lane, on
which the nest can be clearly seen directly above the road (? about 6-8
metres high).
Apparently this is a well known annual nest-site for this bird.
Good luck.
Richard
