Highlights from twice-weekly Canberra Ornithologists' Group (COG) hotline,
for period ending 27 October (some reports are of earlier obs).

THE FOLLOWING ARE 'FIRST RETURNS' FOR THE SEASON:

10/10 DOLLARBIRDS
17/10 SATIN FLYCATCHER
14/10 BRUSH CUCKOOS

That leaves only Brown Songlarks (which haven't apparently arrived for the
past couple of years), Rufous Fantails (on passage up to the mountains) and
the Swifts (not until at least December) to come.

                        MISC RECORDS

BLACK-NECKED MAGPIE! A bird with all-black back from crown to tail, save
only a thin white strip at top and bottom of neck [would make sexing a bit
difficult!]

SUPERB PARROT single male, 22/10, over northern suburban Nicholls golf
course [they are well and truly back in the area just north of here now]

WHITE-BROWED WOODSWALLOW 24/10 in southern edge Callum Brae
woodlands, in the area where a colony of about 50 nested last year [this is
a very intermittent event for Canberra]

SPOTTED QUAIL-THRUSH WITH DEPENDENT YOUNG 25/10, Sentry Box Hill,
southern Namadgi NP (southern half of ACT) [not very surprising, but not
often reported either]
