The good: A count of 960 Eastern Curlews was recorded last week at my local wader roost north of Brisbane. A few weeks earlier had seen perhaps several hundred passing through on their way south - some wore Victorian leg bands. This suggests that about 5% of the world population summer here with maybe half that figure using the area as a staging post. The bad: Trucks have started spraying in preparation for the construction of a canal estate which will completely destroy the whole roost site. The indifferent: Homo sapiens. Cheers - Trevor. |
