1. Murphy's Law.

2. Bands are fitted preferentially to one leg (from memory, the right leg.)
   You might expect the bird to stand on each leg for the same length of
   time, so presumably birds, like humans, have a preferred leg.  Perhaps
   banders could try banding left legs instead, or alternating between right
   and left legs.  (This would not help for those birds which stand on the
   banded leg in a location that obscures the band.)
