Last weekend saw an opportunity to get back to the Capertee Valley to
welcome in the glorious spring. While the purpose of the trip was to check
out the Regent Honeyeater situation, and show Simon Kennedy where the
really smart Swift Parrots go, a bird list was compiled. A total of 92
species were encountered, not bad considering we were working only in areas
where we expected to see Regents and, as a result, did not cover a lot of
habitat types.
Simon and myself were accompanied by Kerryn Herman (about to start an
Honours project on Regents in the valley), Iain Paterson, Graham Fry,
Graham Cam and Annette Cam. Simon saw his first Regent Honeyeaters and we
saw the Londonderry Swift Parrots (now among a racket of Noisy Friarbirds)
on the way back to Sydney. Simon's highligts in the valley also included
Barking Owls, Painted Honeyeater and Plum-headed Finch.
