Given the recent discussion regarding spectacles provided by bird flocks, spare a thought for the passenger pigeon of North America. With an estimated population of between 3 and 5 billion individuals in the 17 century, one flock was estimated by Alexander Wilson in 1810 to contain 2 billion odd individuals. John Audubon described a flock that took 3 days to pass! All this, gone for good! -- +----------------------------------------+ Colin Dollery Charleville District Office Tel: (07)4654 1255 Fax: (07) 4654 1418 E-mail: |
