HARD NEWS
"Turkish secularism is on its way out": In June came the news that a
staggering 167 officers were expelled from the Turkish army. The MGK, the
National Security council, stated that many had Islamic tendencies. Many
previous purges have taken place to address this so-called 'crime'. A few
days before the expulsions from the army, Muslims took to the streets of
Istanbul, protesting the right to wear hijaab in universities. The secular
tradition of Turkey finds itself under siege from the sincere Muslims of
Turkey.
The MGK has as a response become harsher in its suppression tactics. This
was Mustafa Kemal's dream. Muslims beyond Turkey must also take note.
For throughout Islamic Lands, there are sincere Muslims living under secular
constitutions...
EDITORIAL - 'SELF RELIANCE, MORE THAT WORDS OF DEFIANCE'
The Islamic world is dominated by a pitiful bunch of client states, subservient
to other nations. The aim of self-reliance is well beyond the sights of these
governments. Nevertheless it does not stop the leaders of these states using
self-reliance as a clarion call to rally the nation.
RESOLVING LAND DISPUTES
Land disputes have become a major issue in political conflict around the
world. Conflicts begin (or resurface), due to neighbouring countries having
ill-defined border demarcations. Current examples are the on going disputes
over Kosovo, Kashmir, Cyprus and the border conflict flaring between Eritrea
and Ethiopia, two of the world's poorest countries. Why does it seem to be
such a major source of conflict and war? We examine the issues and motives
that underlie this problem.
IS EDUCATION THE WAY FOR REVIVAL?
The advancements of the Western world in education and technology have
enamoured Muslims for many decades. A deep sense of inferiority has
overcome many in the Ummah, who on the basis of the huge gulf in
achievement look up to the Western world and its institutions of science and
learning as a role model for true progress and revival. Some Muslims identify
this as the root of the contemporary advancement of the Western world.
They also believe that education alone is the way to advance the Islamic
Ummah. Students from Islamic Lands flock to the West in this quest...
THE STATE OF RELIGION
Secularism is the detachment of religion from life. Religion is to be practised
by its adherents in their personal lives only. It is based upon the principle
'Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and unto God what is God's'. Today
secularism is held to be a standard throughout the world. It is even present in
Islamic Lands. Many Muslims hasten towards secular ideals, aspiring to be
'moderate' and 'liberal' as opposed to 'fundamentalist' and 'conservative'.
This
is in spite of the fact that Islam maintains that nothing is done for the sake
of
the created, but rather for the sake of the Creator (swt). However, secular
society is forever plagued by a fundamental crisis. What exactly is the cut off
point at which religion extends beyond individual affairs? This question
spawns many longstanding dilemmas that can be seen on both sides of the
Atlantic at the present time.
WITNESSES OVER MANKIND
The USA, for example, is accepted as being the leading nation of the world.
Others such as Britain and France are seen as influential and aspiring to be
the leading nation. However, countries within the Islamic Lands, such as
Bangladesh or Kuwait, are relatively insignificant in their world-profiles. In
fact,
if one were to reflect upon the station of any of the Muslim countries in the
world arena, far from being an influence over nations, they themselves are
influenced by others. Consideration of these facts is not an academic matter,
but is of fundamental importance for the Islamic Ummah. For Allah (swt) has
ordered the Islamic Ummah to ensure that Islam emerges as the sole
standard for all peoples.
