Lainie Berry asks whether breeding of hybrids in captivity is permitted in
Australian states and territories.

After consulting the Department of Natural Resources and Environment - Game
and Wildlife Licensing Unit in Melbourne I was told that in Victoria this
is considered illegal.

Viz. in section 13.(1) of the Victorian Wildlife Regulations 1992 states
"A person must not permit different taxa of wildlife to inter-breed unless
those taxa of wildlife are known to inter-breed in the wild."

 and part 2 states
"A person must not sell or dispose of cross-breeds of wildlife unless those
cross-breeds are known to occur in the wild."

Details of these regulations can be accessed at the following adress.
                       http://www.dms.dpc.vic.gov.au
and accessing the "Law Today" link for alphabetical listings of Acts and
regulations.
