According to the dictionaries I've seen, Jabiru and Jacana are both supposed to stem from Guarani names. Guarani-speaking people are/were found in a region (now) including much of Paraguay and large areas of the surrounding countries. Guarani is one of Paraguay's official languages. I've long wondered how these names found their way to English ( via Spanish speakers ??) and how they are pronounced in Guarani. Andrew |
