You can certainly start atlassing (in the sense of collecting data for the
new Atlas of Australian Birds project) by recording birds out there right
now. There have been delays in finalising kits, but people who have
registered will get them in a week or twoand can fill in, and send in, the
forms then.

For each survey you need to record: Date started and date finished, Time
spent surveying, Positional data (centre of survey area), Location of
survey eg 12 km NW of Mallocoota. Just record the species present and
species that are breeding. The three survey techniques are:

1) 2-ha search. (preferred method) A 20 minute search of a 2 hectare area =
100m x 200m. Surveys must be at least 400m apart

2) Area Search Search an area up to 1km square or up to 10km square
(specify which). These searches must be at least 20 minutes, preferably
starting a new Atlas Record Form after 1 week or 1 month

3) Incidental Search Record sightings of rare, uncommon or unexpected species.
