Hello all! Just came across an article in the latest edition of New Scientist - 1 August (page 7). This refers to a five-year study of biodiversity in 50 forests in Uganda (at a cost of around AU$1.6 million). Looking for a cheaper way to achieve the same ends, a computer analysis indicated that 'protecting the most birds may be a shortcut to preserving diversity'. Something many of us may have believed - but it is good to see concrete evidence for it. Could be worth checking the paper in Nature, vol 394, p472. It could be important ammunition for future bird conservation efforts.
