Along with many other observers in the State of Victoria I participated in
the annual winter count for Orange-bellied Parrots last weekend (Saturday
25/7) at French Island, Western Port Bay.
No luck this year with the rather rare parrot (especillay east of
Melbourne) but we still had a great day recording other birds.
Highlights were:
2 Sacred Kingfishers feeding in dead mangroves during our lunch break
Marsh Harriers, Black-shouldered Kites and a Nankeen Kestrel hunting over
the saltmarsh
Greenshanks, a Caspian Tern and Pied Oystercatchers (several with bands)
along the western shoreline and Ruddy Turnstones amongst the Double-banded
Plovers and Stints near the Tankerton Jetty.
Completed counts will be forwarded to the Wetlands Database and Atlas of
Victorian Wildlife. Did anyone see OBP's at their site??
