Several species of birds have been considered for addition to the
(Victorian) Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988. The following have been
recomended for addition to schedule 2 of the Act and the Scientific
Advisory Committee intends to advertise the items shortly.
- Gull-billed Tern, Caspian Tern, Little Bittern, Black Bittern, Baillons
Crake, Lewin's Rail, Square-tailed Kite and Sooty Albatross (all considered
threatened and/or in decline in Victoria).
In addition, several Potentially Threatening Processes have been
recommended for addition to schedule 3 of the Act. The main one of
interest to the list is:
Incidental catch (or by-catch) of seabirds during longline fishing
operations.
This is in reference to the potential impact of the process on a number of
albatross species that are recorded in Victorian waters and elsewhere.
Note that the status of taxa are considered in Victoria only and their
status elsewhere plays no part in the listing of the item in Victoria.
Recommendation Reports for these items will be publicly advertised (in
Victoria) during the week 10-14 August and anyone may make a submission
supporting or not supporting the recommendations. Should anyone wish to
respond keep tabs on the AGE and "Weekly Times" papers at this time.
Of course if you have records of these species in Victoria, the Atlas of
Victorian Wildlife is keen to hear about them.
